About this package

TTG IgA can be falsely negative in people who make very little IgA, so this panel includes total IgA to make the result trustworthy. If IgA is low, your doctor will switch to an IgG-based coeliac test instead. Iron studies reveal the iron deficiency that often accompanies gluten damage, and CRP and the blood count look for inflammation and anaemia. It is a tidy, focused panel for people with signs of malabsorption: tiredness, weight loss, loose or fatty stools, and iron deficiency without an obvious cause.

A coeliac and malabsorption screen using TTG IgA with total IgA, iron studies, CRP and a blood count.

What does this package cover?

The 5 tests are grouped into 4 health areas:

Blood count & inflammation 2 tests

Red cells, white cells and platelets, blood group, and general inflammation markers.

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)

RBC count, haemoglobin, haematocrit, WBC count with differential (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), platelet count, and red-cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC).

  • CRP (C-Reactive Protein)

The level of C-reactive protein circulating in the blood, which rises within hours of an inflammatory trigger.

Iron & anaemia 1 test

Iron stores and red-cell production - the commonest causes of anaemia and tiredness.

  • Iron Studies

Serum iron, TIBC, UIBC (unsaturated iron-binding capacity), transferrin saturation percentage, and ferritin (the body’s iron-storage protein).

Liver 1 test

Liver enzymes, bilirubin and proteins that show inflammation, fatty liver or reduced liver function.

  • Immunoglobulin A (IgA)

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a blood test. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) measures an antibody (immunoglobulin) level in the blood. It helps assess immune function and is used to investigate frequent infections, allergy, autoimmune disease and some blood disorders.

Other tests 1 test

Additional tests included in this package.

Who is this package for?

Designed for

Men & women

All ages

Purpose

Health screening

People with iron-deficiency anaemia that has no clear cause, chronic loose or fatty stools, or a family history of coeliac disease.

How often should you get it done?

Once for screening. Further tests are chosen by your doctor, based on the result.

Not everyone needs every test. Whether this package suits you depends on your age, symptoms, family history and any ongoing treatment - your doctor can advise.

What can you learn from this package?

The package can provide information about:

  • Blood count & inflammation - Complete Blood Count (CBC) and CRP (C-Reactive Protein)
  • Iron & anaemia - Iron Studies
  • Liver - Immunoglobulin A (IgA)
  • Other tests - Tissue Transglutaminase IgA (TTG)

A package gives individual results for each test - it does not diagnose disease by itself.

How to prepare

  • Fast for 8 to 10 hours before the sample - plain water is allowed. An early-morning slot makes this easier.
  • Drink water as usual, and avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for 24 hours before.
  • Take your regular medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise, and tell the phlebotomist what you take.
  • Wear a loose-sleeved top so the blood sample can be collected easily.

Understanding your package report

Your report lists the result of each test separately, with its own unit and reference range. Values outside the range are highlighted.

There is no single overall "health score" - each result is read on its own and then together with the others. One out-of-range value is not a diagnosis, and a normal report does not guarantee you are completely healthy.

Share the report with your doctor, who will interpret it with your symptoms and history. Call us if you need help reading it.

Frequently asked questions

Why test total IgA with TTG IgA?

About one in a hundred coeliac patients has IgA deficiency, which makes the TTG IgA test read falsely normal. Checking total IgA tells your doctor whether the result can be trusted.

Why are iron studies part of a gut panel?

Iron is absorbed in the upper small intestine, the area most affected in coeliac disease. Persistent iron deficiency is often the first clue.

How should I prepare?

Fast for eight to ten hours with water allowed, and keep gluten in your diet until the sample is taken.
