A Lipid Profile measures the fats (lipids) circulating in your blood - total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, HDL ("good") cholesterol, and triglycerides. It is one of the main tests used to assess your risk of heart disease and stroke, since abnormal lipid levels are a major, modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Ordered as part of routine health screening (especially from age 20 onward and repeated every 4-6 years, more often with risk factors), to assess cardiovascular risk, to monitor the effect of diet, exercise or cholesterol-lowering medication, and in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or a family history of heart disease.
It can help your doctor assess
Dyslipidaemia (abnormal cholesterol/triglyceride levels), increased cardiovascular disease risk, and (with very high triglycerides) risk of pancreatitis.
This test may be considered for:
Whether this test is right for you depends on your symptoms, medical history and the reason for testing - your doctor can advise.
Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and the calculated VLDL and total cholesterol/HDL ratio.
Total Cholesterol
Cholesterol
The sum of all cholesterol carried in the blood, across LDL, HDL and VLDL.
LDL Cholesterol
Cholesterol
Often called "bad" cholesterol - high levels contribute to plaque build-up in artery walls.
HDL Cholesterol
Cholesterol
Often called "good" cholesterol - it helps clear excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. Higher levels are protective.
Triglycerides
Triglycerides
A type of fat used for energy storage. High levels are linked to diet, obesity, diabetes and increased heart-disease risk.
VLDL
Triglycerides
A cholesterol carrier that mainly transports triglycerides; usually calculated from the triglyceride value.
How to read your result
Your report should be read using the reference interval, unit and method shown by the performing laboratory. A result outside a reference interval does not automatically establish a diagnosis, and a result inside the interval does not rule out every health problem. Clinical interpretation depends on symptoms, history and other findings.
| Marker | Result | What it may be associated with |
|---|---|---|
| LDL Cholesterol | High | Associated with increased risk of plaque build-up in arteries and heart disease over time. |
| HDL Cholesterol | Low | Reduced protective capacity against cholesterol build-up - often linked with sedentary lifestyle or smoking. |
| Triglycerides | High | Linked to diet, alcohol, obesity or poorly controlled diabetes; very high levels can also raise pancreatitis risk. |
If a result is outside the range
If the Lipid Profile is reported as high, low, positive, negative or otherwise outside the laboratory's stated interval, the meaning depends on the specific test and the reason it was ordered. Your clinician may consider repeat testing, related investigations or other clinical information before deciding what the result means.
Limitations of this test
A Lipid Profile estimates cardiovascular risk but doesn’t directly show artery blockage - it is combined with other risk factors (age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking) for a full risk assessment.
An abnormal result does not by itself mean you have a particular disease. Your doctor interprets results together with your symptoms, history and other tests.
| Parameter | Reference range | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Total Cholesterol | Less than 200 | mg/dL |
| LDL Cholesterol | Less than 100 (optimal) | mg/dL |
| HDL Cholesterol | Above 40 (men), Above 50 (women) | mg/dL |
| Triglycerides | Less than 150 | mg/dL |
Typical adult ranges for guidance. Reference intervals vary with the laboratory method, age and sex - always read your result against the range printed on your own report.

Your report is shared on WhatsApp and email, usually within 48 hours.
For a blood-based test, a small blood sample is collected by a trained healthcare professional, usually from a vein in the arm. The collection normally takes only a few minutes; mild temporary discomfort or bruising can occur at the puncture site.
Recent meals, alcohol in the last 24 hours, and acute illness can all raise triglycerides and distort results, which is why fasting is usually advised. Certain medicines (steroids, some diuretics) can also affect lipid levels.
Laboratory results are interpreted together with your symptoms, medical history and other investigations. If your results are significantly abnormal, or you have symptoms that worry you, discuss them with a qualified doctor promptly.

Traditionally, 9-12 hours of fasting (water allowed) has been recommended, mainly for accurate triglyceride readings. Some labs now offer non-fasting lipid tests - check with your doctor on which is right for you.
Generally, below 100 mg/dL is considered optimal for most people, though your target may be lower if you have existing heart disease or diabetes - your doctor will set a personalised goal.
For many people, reducing saturated fat, increasing fibre, regular exercise and weight management can meaningfully improve lipid levels. Some people also need medication, especially with a strong family history or very high LDL.
HDL helps transport excess cholesterol away from artery walls back to the liver for disposal, which is why higher HDL levels are considered protective against heart disease.
Every 4-6 years for healthy adults with no risk factors is a common guideline; more frequently if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, are overweight, or are on cholesterol medication.
Usually there are no symptoms - which is exactly why screening matters. Very high triglycerides can occasionally cause abdominal pain from pancreatitis, but this is uncommon.
Yes, alcohol in the 24 hours before the test can raise triglyceride levels significantly. It’s best to avoid alcohol the day before your test.
Yes, if there is a strong family history of early heart disease or very high cholesterol, doctors may recommend screening children - discuss this with a paediatrician.
