Anaemia is a finding, not a diagnosis, and the real question is why. The blood count shows haemoglobin and the size and colour of red cells, which hint at the type. Iron studies and ferritin separate true iron deficiency from other causes, since ferritin shows the stores that run out first. The reticulocyte count shows whether the bone marrow is responding by making new red cells, which helps a doctor decide whether the problem is production, loss or breakdown. This combination can often point to a cause without a long series of repeat tests.

Red cells, white cells and platelets, blood group, and general inflammation markers.
RBC count, haemoglobin, haematocrit, WBC count with differential (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), platelet count, and red-cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC).
Iron & anaemia 3 tests
Iron stores and red-cell production - the commonest causes of anaemia and tiredness.
Serum iron, TIBC, UIBC (unsaturated iron-binding capacity), transferrin saturation percentage, and ferritin (the body’s iron-storage protein).
The percentage or absolute count of reticulocytes - red blood cells that are less than a few days old.
Serum Ferritin is a blood test. Measures the body's iron stores; used to diagnose anaemia and iron overload.

Yes, about eight hours. Do not take iron tablets on the morning of the test, as they can falsely raise the reading. Water is fine.
Yes. Anaemia can come from B12 or folate lack, chronic disease, thalassaemia or other causes. If iron is normal, your doctor may suggest further tests.
Haemoglobin usually begins to rise in two to three weeks, but refilling the stores takes months. Doctors often continue treatment after haemoglobin is normal for that reason.
