About this package

Clotting is a balance. Too slow and bleeding becomes a risk, and too quick and clots can form where they should not. PT with its INR and APTT test the two pathways of the clotting cascade, and fibrinogen measures the protein that forms the final clot. The blood count shows platelets, the cells that plug the first leak. This panel is used before surgery, when taking blood-thinning medicines, in people with easy bruising or heavy bleeding, and in some liver conditions. The pattern of which tests are prolonged helps doctors decide where the problem lies.

Checks how well the blood clots: PT/INR, APTT and fibrinogen, with a blood count and platelet picture.

Health screening

People due for surgery, those on warfarin or similar medicines, anyone with unexplained bruising, nosebleeds or heavy periods, and those with liver disease.

How often should you get it done?

Before a procedure, or at the intervals your doctor sets while on blood thinners.

Not everyone needs every test. Whether this package suits you depends on your age, symptoms, family history and any ongoing treatment - your doctor can advise.

What can you learn from this package?

The package can provide information about:

  • Blood count & inflammation - Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Blood clotting - APTT, Fibrinogen and PT INR(PROTHROMBIN TIME)

A package gives individual results for each test - it does not diagnose disease by itself.

Understanding your package report

Your report lists the result of each test separately, with its own unit and reference range. Values outside the range are highlighted.

There is no single overall "health score" - each result is read on its own and then together with the others. One out-of-range value is not a diagnosis, and a normal report does not guarantee you are completely healthy.

Share the report with your doctor, who will interpret it with your symptoms and history. Call us if you need help reading it.

Frequently asked questions

What is INR?

It is a standardised way to report PT so that results are comparable between labs. For people on warfarin, doctors aim for a target INR range and adjust the dose accordingly.

Do I need to stop my blood thinner before the test?

No. The test is meant to show the effect of your medicine. Tell the phlebotomist what you take and when you last took it.

Is fasting required?

No fasting is needed, and the sample is taken into a special tube, so it should be collected carefully.
